Mayors visit Young at Heart groups

Mayor visits Chesterton

Young at Heart groups in North Staffordshire enjoyed visits from the mayors of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Cllr Gill Hessom, Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, visited the Chesterton Lunch Club as they held an official open day. And the Hanley group invited Cllr Lillian Dodd, Stoke-on-Trent’s Lord Mayor, to join them for lunch. The mayors talked to volunteers and the older people who attend the groups. Both also helped out serving tea, coffee and refreshments.

Mark Porter, who works for Young at Heart, said, “Cllr Hesson and Cllr Dodd really enjoyed their time with us and we thank them for their time and support.”

They saw the valuable role volunteers play in Young at Heart – a project that offers friendship and support to older people who are vulnerable and isolated.

Mark said, “We were pleased to welcome the Mayors to our project, and that they took the time to talk to our volunteers and the men and women who come to the groups. Everyone really valued and enjoyed the occasion. It was a brilliant way to begin our upcoming volunteer drive. Volunteers are such an important part of what we do and we need to recruit more to really help the project grow.”

Young at Heart works in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire to support older people who are experiencing loneliness and isolation.
