Champion of his community

Matt receiving award

Matt Ford has been named Community Champion 2016 by Kidsgrove Town Council in North Staffordshire.

Matt, who runs the Young at Heart project in the Potteries, picked up the award on 22 June. Each year the council presents the award to a person or group that improves the local community. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Cllr David Allport said councillors had voted unanimously to recognise Matt for his work with older people.

Young at Heart is a partnership project between Father Hudson’s Care and three local parishes. It supports isolated older people in Stoke and North Staffordshire. Matt has developed lunch clubs, outreach and befriending services and has built strong connections with local supermarkets and people who help out by supplying food or by volunteering their time. The groups offer a way for older people to get out and about, meet people, make new friends and enjoy a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, singalong sessions, games and coach trips.

Fr Julian Green from the parish of St John the Evangelist also spoke, thanking Matt for his work providing older people’s services in the area.

Matt said: “The groups make a huge difference to the older people who come to them. I am touched to receive this award.”
