COVID-19 Update from Father Hudsons Care

Bringing fun and friendship to older people in Staffordshire

YAH easter party

In spring 2018, older people living in Staffordshire who are at risk of isolation will be able to find welcome at Father Hudson’s newest Young at Heart group.

Opening in April, the new Chesterton group will help bring together people experiencing loneliness, giving them the chance to meet others and stay connected to their local community. They will be able to enjoy a tea or coffee over biscuits and a friendly chat, and take part in a range of games and activities as they wish.

Young at Heart already runs groups in Meir, Hanley, Kidsgrove and Butt Lane, which offer accessible exercise, tea dances, crafts, sing-a-longs and much more. The Hanley and Butt Lane groups put on light lunches followed by activities. All groups have regular speakers, talking to guests about a variety of topics from healthy eating, to staying safe at home and more between. And they run regular day trips for all groups, visiting attractions around the country. For many people who go to the groups, they offer a hand of friendship in lonely times.

June, a regular at the Meir group, says, “I eat on my own every day except Tuesday which is my day for socialising, and it’s so nice to share an adventure with other people and share a meal with my friends. I love that part! I get to meet all sorts and because it’s near my home, during the daytime with people I know, I feel safe. A lot of the activities are sitting down so I feel equal to everybody else. I think this kind of thing is really needed because it brings people together.”

The Chesterton group is the first of several new groups Young at Heart is opening over the next few years to meet the growing number of older people at risk of isolation. Starting on 30 April, it meets every other Monday from 1:30 – 3:30 at the Parish Hall of St John the Evangelist in Chesterton. Sessions cost £1, which includes refreshments and activities.

The venue is fully accessible and all are welcome. For more information about the new group, call Young at Heart on 01782 269990.
