Volunteer Mentor - Tabor House
Purpose of the role:
Each guest is matched with a volunteer mentor. The volunteer mentor builds trust with their guest, acts as a sounding board for them, and supports them in taking steps to regain control of their lives.
What does this role involve?
Once matched with a mentee guest, each volunteer mentor will:
- work closely with them on a one-to-one basis to gain their trust.
- regularly meet with the mentee and listen to their needs, acting as a sounding board.
- support the mentee to put together a strength-based achievable development plan.
- participate in creating and helping deliver the mentee’s personal development plan.
- shadow the mentee when needed at pre-arranged appointments and sessions.
- take responsibility for the Health, Safety and Welfare of themself, their mentee and other guests.
- liaise with Tabor House staff and external organisations to support the mentee’s personal development plan.
What attributes and skills do I need?
You will have:
- Good communication and listening skills, being friendly and approachable.
- Some knowledge and sensitivity to issues relating to homelessness, including mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse (training/awareness will be provided).
- Emotional intelligence, being sensitive and empathic toward individuals experiencing hardship.
- Resilience and determination to enable your mentee to take control of their life.
- Good organisational skills to shadow your mentee at appointments and sessions with external organisations and providers.
