COVID-19 Update from Father Hudsons Care

Parishes

“Times and needs have changed, but the desire to respond to the Gospel has always found an authentic expression through Father Hudson’s Care.” Archbishop Bernard Longley

/media/getinvolved/library/offertory-gsm-leek-19.jpgAs a principal social care agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham, we welcome and value the support of parish communities, the clergy, and individual parishioners.

There are many ways you can help us continue helping others by getting involved in our work.

Annual collection

Each year, all Catholic parishes in the Birmingham Archdiocese hold a second collection for us at Mass. This usually takes place in September and is supported by the Archbishop.

We greatly appreciate the support givento us through this collection, as it gives us a chance to remind parishioners of our central role within social care in the Archdiocese. It also plays a significant part financially, enabling us to continue supporting people experiencing great need across the Archdiocese and to seek more ways to reach out in our communities.

Read more about how our Community Projects, Children and Families Service, and our Adult Care Service change lives. If you are a priest reading this page, it would be wonderful if you could mention these when asking parishioners to contribute to the annual collection.

 Crib and Lenten appeals

Some parishes also choose to support us through our Christmas Crib Appeal, by donating offerings taken at the Christmas Crib, and through our Lenten Appeal, when your parish’s sacrificial almsgiving is donated to us for our work.

Perhaps, if your parish does not yet support us at Christmas or Lent, you could suggest to your priest or relevant parish representative that this be considered in future?

Organising events

Organising a fundraising event and donating the proceeds to Father Hudson’s Care is another great way to support us: cake sales after Sunday Mass, sponsored walks around local landmarks or parish boundaries, coffee mornings or pudding evenings, car washes or concerts – any of these can help your parishioners get to know each other, have fun together and raise money for a worthwhile diocesan charity at the same time!

Our Fundraising Toolkit contains lots of ideas and information on how to organise fundraising events.

Prayerful support

Prayerful support is another way you can become involved in the work of Father Hudson’s Care. Perhaps your church community could remember a different aspect of our work in your parish’s Bidding Prayers on a weekly or monthly basis? Or perhaps you could remember in prayer the work of the particular Father Hudson’s Care project which is closest to your parish?

Parish talks

As a Catholic charity, one of our heartfelt wishes is to bring our work to the attention of every member of the Catholic community. Although we would love to come and give talks at each and every parish, this is simply not possible due to our limited size. However, occasionally we are able to visit parishes for specific talks or events. If this is something you are interested in, or if you would like to hold your own talk about our work, please contact us for more information.

Schools

Many parishioners who are parents will know that we are active in Catholic schools across the whole Archdiocese; both primary schools, for the Good Shepherd Appeal, and secondary schools with Walk a Mile in their Shoes. If your child’s school receives a visit from one of our School and Parish Fundraisers, please take the time to find out about our work from your child and support the fundraising organised by the school on our behalf. We are very conscious that we reach many Catholic homes in this indirect yet crucial way.

Working with you

Most importantly, our vision is to assist in building up social care initiatives right across the Archdiocese, wherever parish communities feel led to meet need in their area. If your parish community feels a call to social action, please remind your priest that Father Hudson’s Care is here to assist and advise. Our history began in Coleshill, where Father Hudson started his work over 100 years ago… but we know our work today and in the future is bringing our experience of caring into all parishes, to build an even more socially caring community for future generations.
