COVID-19 Update from Father Hudsons Care

Legacy stories - the difference gifts in Wills make

Every gift in a Will makes a difference to Father Hudson's enabling us to continue and develop our work. In 2017, we received a legacy of £3,920 and it's still helping vulnerable young people years later. Some of this legacy pays for clinical supervision from psychotherapist Fi Newood. Here she tells Ginny Cullen about the difference this legacy is making to the support New Routes Fostering can offer young people experiencing difficulties.

Head of Families and Children Services, Jo Walthew says ‘Fi's support changes lives. Because of it, children and young people are feeling more settled with their families, placements are more secure meaning children and young people are much more likely to stay long-term with their families. This is exactly what we aim for at New Routes, secure, happy, safe childhoods. This legacy decided upon so many years ago, is still making a difference, helping children who deserve a brighter future to fulfill their potential and be part of a loving family, for some of them, for the very first time.’

Young at Heart started because of a legacy left to Father Hudson's to support older people. For Betty, this legacy has changed her life.

“Anyone who knows me, knows I am passionate about the work of Father Hudson’s Care. It wasn’t until we had a legacy training a few years ago that it occurred to me that I could demonstrate that passion by leaving a legacy to Father Hudson’s.

In that training, we learnt that legacies are very special gifts; they are a gift of a lifetime which can, and do, make the world of difference, whether they are large or relatively small in size. They are transformative gifts that enable a charity to make bold decisions. Not only was Father Hudson’s created because of gifts in Wills, our project in Staffordshire for older people, Young at Heart, exists today because of a legacy given 7 years ago.

As a fundraiser, I feel very strongly that I can’t ask someone else to do something that I am not prepared to do myself. So now we’ve got our free Will writing service with Farewill, I’ve been the first to use it and leave a legacy to Father Hudson’s.

I’d been putting off updating my Will, and with the pandemic not being able to get out to a solicitor made it even easier to ignore. But writing my Will online meant I could do it at home, when it was convenient to me, I could ask any question I had either on the phone or via the web chat 7 days a week between 9am and 7pm. And there was no hanging around for them to get back to me, they promise to answer any online query within 60 seconds. The whole process can take as little as 30 minutes. You either download your Will, print out and sign it with your witnesses or if, like me, you don’t have access to a printer at home, they print it out for you for free and post it to you at home.

An online Will was a new experience for me, but it was really easy to do and I knew I was in safe hands. Farewill are the market leaders in online Will writing. Last year they won the Will writing firm of the Year at the British Wills and Probate Awards so I felt comfortable. I was able to tell my family my funeral wishes, I was able to write personal notes to beneficiaries, and best of all I was able to leave a proportion of my estate to Father Hudson’s Care. And I feel great about it. I’ve sorted an important document, supported a cause I’m passionate about and made things easy for my family for when the time comes.

So, if you need to write or update yours, I can wholeheartedly recommend writing your Will online with our new partner Farewill.”
