COVID-19 Update from Father Hudsons Care

About the Good Shepherd Appeal

The Lenten fundraising challenge that directly supports people in your Archdiocese.

Held during the spring term and Lent, our annual Good Shepherd Appeal is an opportunity for children to learn about Catholic virtues, to witness how faith can be put into action, and to play a part in supporting Catholic social care in our Archdiocese.

XXX Catholic primary schools across the Archdiocese take part by organising collections, holding fundraising events, and by getting involved in fundraising challenges. The most successful events happen when children are involved in leading the fundraising activities themselves.

The end of the appeal is marked by a Good Shepherd Mass - a joyous event that brings us together in song and worship as we celebrate the children’s hard work.

Good Shepherd Assemblies

Our School and Parish Engagement Officers deliver assemblies that inspire children to get involved. During the assembly, the children learn about our work with people in need across the Archdiocese. Our Engagement Officers share photos, case studies, and videos from people we have supported.

The assemblies are an excellent way of showing the children how important each donation is and how they help make a real difference to people’s lives.

Due to the current lockdown, we are offering a virtual assembly presented by our Engagement Officers. Watch the assembly here...

Good Shepherd Masses

To celebrate the end of the appeal, we hold Good Shepherd Masses at churches around the Archdiocese and each school that takes part is invited to attend. During the Mass, one or two pupils from each school present their school’s offertory cheque to the Principal Celebrant usually the Archbishop or one of the Auxiliary Bishops.

The Masses are joyful occasions in which the children are encouraged to play an active role by participating in the offertory procession, singing hymns and reading Bible verses or bidding prayers. They offer the chance to meet with other schools, as well as giving an opportunity to talk to the Bishop or Archbishop. Some senior schools also help by leading the music or handing out orders of service. This is an opportunity for older students to inspire the younger children.

In 2020 we held our first ever virtual Mass thanks to XXXXXXX. This year, we will hold another virtual Mass on XXXXXXX
