Training for Foster Carers
Training is as an important aspect of New Routes support to our foster carers.
New Routes expect all prospective carers to attend all preparation training sessions and existing and newly approved carers are required to attend post approval training in order to update and consolidate their learning during their fostering role.
The new CWDC Training, support and development Standards for foster carers, being implemented from April 2008, requires all new carers, once approved, to complete the relevant certificate in their first 12 months of fostering.
To further enhance carers training and development carers will have access to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 Caring for Children and Young People. Some of our carers have successfully completed this course, and many are currently undertaking this course.
All carers will have a personal development plan which maps out their training and progress.
New Routes training aims to:
• Ensure all carers are confident in safe caring principles
• Ensure all carers protect young people from harm
• Help foster carers improve their skills and knowledge.
• Ensure all carers properly consider the effects of discrimination within the community and the discrimination that young people may face
• Encourage and promote carers own professional and personal development
