Fostering in New Routes

image

Our project successfully demonstrates that New Routes fostering really works for children and young people placed with our carers; because children and young person’s needs are carefully matched with the experience, knowledge and skills of our foster carers.  We offer quality support to our foster carers by providing regular monthly visits (with an allocated social worker), on-going training and out of hours telephone support. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an awareness of, and have a commitment to, understand the needs of children and young people in care. During the assessment process your attitudes towards, class, gender, age, sexuality, race, religion, culture, disability will be discussed.

We are seeking to recruit people who:

Are married or single

have a spare room for a child/young person (no sharing allowed)

have the time to give

are committed and available to attend training and support groups

are open to regular support and supervision

have a strong motivation and desire to acquire and improve their skills

are not depending on the fostering payments to replace their full or part time earnings

have good communication skills which enable them to converse with children and young people of all ages as well as professionals

will not give up when the going gets tough

have the ability to manage a wide range of demanding situations.

have flexibility with their employer (if working) in order to attend various meetings and appointments in relation to the young person at short notice and /or planned.

Now consider the following points to help you to decide if you have the qualities required for the New Routes Project:

You understand looking after children and young people from another family is different from caring from your own children.

You appreciate that fostering will have an impact on your own immediate and wider family.

You genuinely like and enjoy children and can remain enthusiastic about them even when things get difficult.

You do not expect children to be grateful for the care that you show or demonstrate through your actions.
